My favorite Patti Smith albums are a tie between Horses and Easter, but. I really do love some of her later stuff. This song just hits me right in the heart.

This Friday, Friday, FRIDAY (June 7th), I will have the great honor of reading at Dance to the Radio! with a bunch of other fabulously talented folks.

I will be reading from How To Have A Body (my new manuscript in progress). My piece is about whirlwind love, ecstatic sex, terrible heartbreak, and the last minute & 18 seconds of Satellite of Love. Also there is a lot of sad Lou Reed, obscure David Bowie, & screamy Patti Smith in there. ‘Cause that’s how I (rock &) roll. ;)

Come out, come out, folks.

So I cannot stand the Rolling Stones. But I love Patti Smith, and this is a pretty fabulous cover.

"And so we listened to Easter driving around on Easter. Sometimes real life is weirder than anything you could make up.”

C’mon, my Spirit, are you ready? Let’s go!

Today is a much better day than yesterday.

Patti Smith covers “Gimme Shelter” on Jools Holland’s rock’n’roll show (?!).

(I actually really, really strongly dislike the Rolling Stones. But I love this cover.)

Patti Smith’s “Summer Cannibals” from Gone Again (1996). God, so good.

I felt a rising in my throat, the girls a-sayin’ grace
And the air, the viscious air, pressed against my face
And it all got too damn much for me
It just got too damn rough
And I pushed away my plate
Said “Boys, I’ve had enough”
And I laid upon the table another piece of meat
And I opened up my veins and I said, “C’mon. Eat.”

"Angel looks down at him and says, “Oh, pretty boy,
Can’t you show me nothing but surrender?”
Johnny gets up, takes off his leather jacket,
Taped to his chest there’s the answer,
You got pen knives and jack knives and
Switchblades preferred, switchblades preferred"

Oh.

The Patti Smith Bedroom Dancing/Crying scene from All Over Me. Directed by the Sichel sisters, 1997. So glad I found this online…

Today’s anthem.
