Gina

Hi there, I'm Gina.

This blog serves many purposes for me -- sharing new writing & works in progress, keeping in touch with old friends, making new friends, and keeping an eye on what's happening on the interwebs. But mostly? It's where I blow off steam from graduate school and talk about which David Bowie song is the queerest. ;)

If you wanna know more about me, check out my website for info about the work that I do in the world.

If you're here because you're a fan of my writing, I recommend checking out How To Have A Body for a peek at my current manuscript in progress.

Thanks for stopping by my little corner of the internet. Enjoy your stay.

  • A performance troupe called The Gagaettes makes a fake Lady Gaga video (for her song “Monster”) that looks a helluva lot like a real Lady Gaga video. I kind of love this! (I mean, okay, as far as music video tributes go, it is not as good as DAVE. But what is?)

I have mixed feelings about Gaga as a pop star and cultural icon for a multitude of reasons. Other people have read her far better than I ever could, so I don’t feel like expounding on those feels at the moment. But. I unabashedly loved The Fame Monster when it came out — it is a fantastic dance album, really — and this is one of my favorite songs from that record.

  • I broke my own very good rule about NOT pulling writing all-nighters because I just needed to get this piece out or… I don’t even know what, I was gonna explode? I mean, I wasn’t gonna sleep either way, it was that kind of Nervous Productive Energy. So, like, I might as well actually write if I’m not gonna be able to sleep.

And then this fucking song comes on my itunes as the sun comes up & I finish cranking out what amounts to 1,600 new words. You guys, real life is a lot fucking weirder than anything I could ever make up. This song is hella cheezy & totally bombastic & it’s not like I love Lady Gaga* much lately. Still. She is managing to tug on some tender heartstrings. Heartstrings which are probably made tender-er by staying up all night writing a story that amounts to FIIIIIIIIILTH + FEEEEEEELS.

  • Okay, so. This really makes me wonder if Lady Gaga is a Sifl & Olly fan. The similarities between this and “Telephone” are kinda great.

  • “A friend responded with this point: “It will be seen by a lot more people than your average - ‘what do we want and when do we want it’ protest - because as much as I am pro union and will support boycotts, I don’t forward info on every single boycott because seriously, nobody would read my reports if I did. I saw the YouTube video and then saw that the Palace Hotel was part of the boycott list and canceled my reservations for tea at the Garden Room. I probably would not have found out about the boycott if it wasn’t entertaining enough to go viral, and I definitely wouldn’t have posted it in my [Facebook] status and then five of my friends probably wouldn’t have posted in theirs…”
    — I am so damn thrilled that “Don’t Get Caught in a Bad Hotel” has gone viral. My mom sent me a link to it today. Granted, my Ma is super queer-supportive and comes from a fairly long line of working-class union members and/or organizers. But still. She’s a straight woman in her sixties with “a good union job” (her description), and this video and article were sent to her by a friend of hers, another straight woman in her sixties with a good union job. And they both think it’s wonderful and are telling friends to boycott the hotels on the list.

It just really warms my heart that this organizing is reaching beyond the young, queer, and hip bubble. When I first saw “Bad Hotel”, the creativity and fun behind the protest made me really happy. And, honestly, I also had this moment of “But will this speak to folks who aren’t scrappy activist twentysomething queers? Will it reach queer folks — especially older queer folks — who actually have the economic resources to stay at nice hotels for Pride? Will it reach older straight folks who will talk to their gay friends about it?” If my mom’s email to me is any indication, it looks like it has. And that is a beautiful thing.

  • Lady Gaga, Intersex, and The Real World vs. The Unicorn World

Lisa Harvey at Questioning Transphobia wrote a great blog post on the rumors about Lady Gaga being intersex. Lisa articulates pretty much all of my feelings on the subject way more eloquently than I could hope to. Take a gander, please.

Parts of the “Telephone” video are clearly intended to be a direct response to the intersex rumors. Namely: The beginning of the video, where the guards make reference to Gaga’s junk. (Guard #1: “I told you she didn’t have a dick.” Guard #2: “Too bad!”)

Honestly? If Gaga is going to choose to respond to these rumors in any way — whether she is intersex or not — in my fantasy unicorns-n-rainbows world, I’d love to see her say something along the lines of:
“Hey, legions of adoring fans! Here’s some information about what intersex is. Here’s why intersex people shouldn’t be subjected to secrecy, lies, and/or purely cosmetic, medically unnecessary ‘treatment’ for their intersex conditions. Informed consent is awesome! In conclusion, I will now give millions of my dollars to Intersex Initiative and Advocates for Informed Choice.”

But this is pop culture, and I know that that is very unlikely. There’s probably a bigger chance of Gaga doing a concert on the moon than there is of her responding to the rumors with a shred of seriousness. And I agree with Lisa’s original point that her body is none of the public’s business.

That said: She has made a public response now, and it’s… Lacking. For the only response thus far to be a conversation two guards have about her junk in the “Telephone” video is disappointing. Lady Gaga wields a lot of power and influence; she could actually make a big difference in the lives of intersex people.
